![]() Duke Gunning For Unprecedented Fifth Straight ACC Tournament Crown
March 16, 2003
Duke looks for its fifth straight Atlantic Coast Conference tournament title as it takes on surprising North Carolina State on Sunday in a rematch of last season's final. The third-seeded and 12th-ranked Blue Devils (23-6) are the only team in the 49-year history of the conference to win more than three straight tournament titles. The Blue Devils have won 14 straight ACC Tournament games since falling in the 1998 championship to North Carolina. Last season, Duke beat North Carolina State 91-61 in the title game. "We really want it," captain Chris Duhon said. "We didn't win the regular-season title, and we just think we're a better team that we showed for most of the year. "Things are starting to get better for us, and we feel better. We're realizing how good we can really be. Tomorrow is another step in us becoming an outstanding team." Duke lost two of three heading into the tournament and was not expected to extend its tournament streak. But the Blue Devils became the clear favorites after No. 2 Maryland lost to North Carolina in the quarterfinals and No. 1 seed Wake Forest fell to the Wolfpack on Saturday. "I don't think a lot of people expected us to be here, but we're going to keep doing the things we've been doing, and hopefully we can get another win," Duke guard Daniel Ewing said. The Blue Devils earned their shot at another title with Saturday's easy 75-63 win over North Carolina, avenging a loss to the Tar Heels in last weekend's season finale. Ewing, who had a career-high 32 points in Friday's 83-76 quarterfinal win over Virginia, scored 19 points, including 13 in the first half. Duke shot 61 percent in the first 20 minutes and led by 21 at halftime. Ewing is 18-of-28 from the field during the tournament, including 8-of-12 from 3-point range. "I've told the guys to just get focused because everybody is going to be hungry in the title game," said Duke senior Casey Sanders, who has never lost an ACC tourney game. "You can get tired as the tournament goes on, so we have to buckle down." The Wolfpack (18-11) come in off Saturday's 87-83 win over the Demon Deacons. NC State earned a measure of revenge for a 78-72 loss to Wake Forest on March 8, in which it blew an 11-point second half lead. "Last week's loss really struck us hard," said Julius Hodge, who scored a career-high 31 points. "It was like a rib shot to us, and it really hurt." Marcus Melvin added 23 points, including four 3-pointers, and Josh Powell added 16 for NC State.
The Blue Devils and Wolfpack split the season series 1-1, with Duke winning the last meeting 79-68.
