2007 FAN'S GUIDE: QUARTERFINAL NOTES (after both sessions)

March 10, 2007

  • Virginia Tech's win over Wake Forest was its first in an ACC Tournament and came in its third try.
  • Virginia Tech had two turnovers in its victory over Wake Forest. That is the second-fewest ever committed by a team in an ACC Tournament game, after the single turnover suffered by N.C. State in a 12-10 slowdown win against Duke in the 1968 semifinals.
  • Boston College advanced to the ACC Tournament semifinals for the second time in two tries as a conference member.
  • Quarterfinal victories by North Carolina and N.C. State sent those two teams to the ACC Tournament semifinals, where they will face Boston College and Virginia Tech, respectively. That marks the 49th time in 54 years the semis will include at least two teams from the so-called Big Four, the ACC teams from North Carolina - Duke, North Carolina, N.C. State and Wake Forest. The only finals devoid of a Big Four entrant occurred in 1990, when Georgia Tech defeated Virginia.

  • North Carolina and N.C. State will each be appearing in their eighth ACC Tournament semifinals in the past 11 years. That run traces to 1997, when the two teams last met for the ACC title. Boston College played for the championship last year, losing 78-76 to Duke.
  • N.C. State's rally from a 40-26 halftime deficit against Virginia was the second-largest such comeback in ACC Tournament history. The only escape from a larger halftime deficit than the 14 points surmounted by the Wolfpack came in the 2004 semifinals, when Maryland rallied from 19 points down to beat N.C. State, 85-82. The Terrapins went on to defeat Duke in overtime in the finals for their third ACC championship.
