Jackets' Favors Named ACC Rookie of the Year
March 9, 2010
GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Georgia Tech forward Derrick Favors, the runaway winner in pre-season predictions for ACC Rookie of the Year, has claimed the award for real in voting by the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association.
Favors, a 6-10 freshman from Atlanta, was chosen by 45 of 53 electors. Maryland center Jordan Williams received six votes and Miami guard Durand Scott and Georgia Tech guard Glen Rice Jr. each received one.
Favors becomes the 11th Yellow Jacket -- an ACC high -- to earn rookie acclaim. The program has now had a Rookie of the Year in all four decades of its ACC membership.
"I'm happy to be in that company," Favors said.
"I think I'm doing better than I thought I would. I knew coming in that I'd have to get a whole lot stronger than I was in high school. I've gotten better at picking up the right times to block a shot, not trying to go for every-thing. I just try to make smart plays and not pick up silly fouls."
Favors excelled down the stretch for the Yellow Jackets, averaging 16.4 points and 9.6 rebounds a game in the final five regular-season contests. The stretch was highlighted by one of the best performances by any freshman nationally, a 21-point, 18-rebound effort at Maryland on Feb. 20. If not for the Terrapins' remarkable out-of-bounds play and buzzer-beating 25-footer, Favors' offensive rebound and stick-back with three seconds left would have been remembered as the game-winning play.
"I'm very happy that Derrick has been recognized in this way," Tech coach Paul Hewitt said. "He has shown steady growth and progress this year, and the award is very much deserved."
