Feb. 12, 2008

February 12, 1962
Wake Forest's Len Chappell scores 50 points in a 116-67 victory over Virginia. Although Chappell's point total has been matched once and topped seven times in ACC history, that's still the most points an ACC player has ever scored against an ACC opponent. The two-time ACC player of the year would average 30.1 points for the 1961-62 season.

February 12, 1954
South Carolina, behind 21 points by Jack Hofferth and 19 points by Joe Smith, defeat The Citadel 79-59 before an announed crowd of 50 at The Citadel's Field House. The Gamecocks led 45-27 at halftime.

February 14, 1976
North Carolina outlasts Tulane, 113-106, in New Orleans. It takes the No. 3-ranked Tar Heels four overtimes to overcome the Green Wave, matching the longest game in ACC history

February 16, 1986
Johnny Dawkins blocks David Rivers' potential game-winning shot to give No. 2-ranked Duke a 75-74 victory over No. 14 Notre Dame in Cameron. The Sunday afternoon victory caps a remarkable 24-hour performance by Dawkins and the Devils. On Saturday night, Duke travels to N.C. State and edges the No. 17-ranked Wolfpack, 72-70, on a pair of free throws by Dawkins. The next afternoon, the Blue Devils battle the Fighting Irish in front of a national television audience in a game that isn't decided until Duke's senior guard swats away Rivers' running one-hander at the buzzer.

February 18, 2001
Clemson, last in the ACC standings, upsets No. 1-ranked North Carolina, 75-65, on a Sunday afternoon in Littlejohn Coliseum. Guard Wil Solomon leads the Tigers with 25 points and guard Tony Stockman clinches the win with a late 3-pointer.

February 20, 1968
Duke beats Clemson, 82-70, in tiny Fike Gym, which is about to be replaced by Littlejohn Coliseum. After the game, Blue Devil coach Vic Bubas, who once threatened to have his players warm up in miner's helmets because Fike was so dark, waits until the gym empties, then walks to centercourt, kneels and kisses the Tiger logo goodbye.

February 20, 1986
Len Bias cements his status as one of the ACC's all-time great players when he leads unranked Maryland to a 77-72 overtime victory over No. 1-ranked North Carolina in the Smith Center. The Terps senior star, who earlier poured in 41 points in a loss at Duke, scores 35 against the Tar Heels. More importantly, he sparks a dramatic comeback, symbolized by an inbounds play where he bounced the ball off the back of a Tar Heel defender, recovered his own pass and scored on a reverse dunk. It's also UNC's first loss ever in the Smith Center.

February 23, 1963
All-American Art Heyman makes his final home game a memorable one as he leads Duke to a 106-93 victory over North Carolina. The powerful forward, en route to becoming the ACC's first consensus national player of the year, pours in a career high 40 points before he is lifted with 22 seconds left to play. Play is stopped for three minutes as the player known as "King Arthur" is given an extended standing ovation.

February 23, 1992
Wake Forest edges No. 1-ranked Duke, 72-68, in Lawrence Joel Coliseum, led by 24 points from Georgetown transfer Anthony Tucker and 18 points from freshman Rodney Rogers, a Durham native who grew up a few miles from the Duke campus. The top-ranked Blue Devils, playing without point guard Bobby Hurley, have a chance to tie the game in the closing seconds, but Grant Hill's football-like pass to Christian Laettner 70 feet away curves left and forces Laettner to step out of bounds to catch it. Just over one month later, Duke executes the same play - with Hill's pass on target this time - to beat Kentucky in the East Regional title game.

February 25, 1978
All-American Phil Ford plays his final home game for North Carolina, scoring a career-high 34 points in an 87-83 victory over Duke. The Rocky Mount, N.C., product hits 13 of 19 shots from the floor and passes out five assists to help the Tar Heels hold off the hard-charging Blue Devils. The loss would be the last for Duke before the national title game, when the Devils would fall to Kentucky.
