GREENSBORO, N.C. - Virginia Tech's Zabian Dowdell was named the ACC Player of the Week and North Carolina's Ty Lawson was selected as the ACC Rookie of the Week.
In earning the ACC Player of the Week award for the second time in three weeks, Dowdell averaged 26.5 points, 6.5 assists and 3.0 steals as the 24th-ranked Hokies posted league road wins over Miami and Georgia Tech. The Pahokee, Fla., native opened the week scoring a career-high 30 points to go along with five assists and four steals in a 92-85 win at Miami Tuesday. In Saturday's 73-65 victory at Georgia Tech, the senior guard had a game-high 23 points, eight assists and three rebounds. For the week, Dowdell was 14-23 (.609) from the field and 23-26 (.885) from the line.
Lawson scored a season-high 18 points and had eight assists, just one turnover and four steals in North Carolina's 92-64 win at 17th-ranked Arizona Saturday. Playing without three regulars due to illness and injury, the Tar Heels handed Arizona its worst home-court defeat in 25 years. Earlier in the week, the Clinton, Md., freshman had 15 points, five assists and three steals in an 88-60 win at Wake Forest, marking the Tar Heels' largest win against Wake Forest in 20 years and its largest ever in Winston-Salem. For the week, Lawson averaged 16.5 points, 6.5 assists, 3.5 steals and hit on 13-of-22 from the floor.
