Dec. 17, 2007 No. 1 Carolina Takes Down Rutgers, 93-71 PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) - Ty Lawson scored a career-high 26 points and Tyler Hansbrough had 20 points and 11 rebounds before leaving when he hit his head and No. 1 North Carolina beat Rutgers 93-71 on Sunday night. Hansbrough, the preseason national player of the year, tried to take a charge from Earl Pettis with 5:47 to play and the Tar Heels leading by 23 points. Hansbrough went to the floor in a sitting position and then hit the back his head against the knee of a television cameraman and then the bottom of the basket support. He stayed down on the floor for a couple of minutes before being helped up by coach Roy Williams and the trainer and being taken to the locker room. Hansbrough didn't return. "A little dizzy," Hansbrough said when asked how he felt. "I took a pretty good blow when I fell but I'm feeling better. The cameraman was sitting close to the floor and I fell back into him."
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) - Freshman Jeff Teague scored a career-high 18 points and Wake Forest pulled away late during a 72-56 victory against Bucknell on Sunday, spoiling the return to North Carolina of late coach Skip Prosser's son. L.D. Williams scored 11 points, Harvey Hale added 10 and James Johnson had 12 rebounds for the Demon Deacons (6-3), who shook off an eight-day layoff and snapped a two-game losing streak with a late 10-0 run. Wake Forest won the second meeting of a home-and-home series that started last year to match Prosser against his son Mark, an assistant to Bison coach Pat Flannery, before the matchup took on a somber meaning when the elder Prosser died of an apparent massive heart attack in July. Mark Prosser exchanged pregame hugs with several members of Wake Forest's coaching staff, including head coach Dino Gaudio, Skip Prosser's protege and best friend, and was recognized by the LJVM Coliseum public address announcer during introductions.
NORFOLK, Va. - Virginia Tech cut a 12-point halftime deficit to two points, but could not recapture the lead and lost 72-69 at Old Dominion on Sunday evening at the Ted Constant Center in Norfolk. ODU jumped out to a 14-point lead late in the first period and led 45-33 at the half, before the Hokies went on an 8-0 run to open the second half. The Hokies continued the comeback, cutting the score to 71-69 on a three-point basket by junior A.D. Vassallo (Toa Baja, P.R.) with 26 seconds remaining. After ODU made one of two free throws with 19 seconds to play, the Hokies missed a late shot. A desperation shot at the buzzer was off and the Monarchs held on for the 72-69 victory. The Hokies, now 5-4 overall, were led by Vassallo, who scored 20 points. Freshman Malcolm Delaney (Baltimore, Md.) scored 17 points and freshman Jeff Allen (Washington, D.C.) recorded his third straight double-double with 13 points and a career-high 16 rebounds. Senior Deron Washington (New Orleans, La.) added 11 points for the Hokies.
