Men's Basketball ACCtion: Sunday, November 30
Nov. 30, 2008
RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State senior Ben McCauley is focused on only one thing right now: getting rebounds.
Sure, points tend to follow, especially when those rebounds are on the offensive end of the floor. But McCauley knew coming into this season, without the presence of forward-center J.J. Hickson in the Wolfpack lineup, that he had to establish himself as a powerful rebounder.
For the last two games, including Sunday afternoon’s 79-52 victory over UNC Greensboro at the RBC Center, McCauley has established himself as a rebounder, posting back-to-back double-doubles. Last year, McCauley did not get double-figure scoring and rebounding once – now he’s accomplished the feat twice in four games.
Sunday, he finished with 17 points and a career-best 15 rebounds against the Spartans, who really had no match for McCauley and reserve sophomore center Tracy Smith, who came off the bench to notch his second consecutive double-digit game, with 14 points on seven of 11 shooting.
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) - Ty Lawson scored 22 points to help No. 1 North Carolina beat North Carolina-Asheville 116-48 on Sunday despite playing without national player of the year Tyler Hansbrough.
Danny Green added 18 points for the Tar Heels (7-0), who had an easy time staying unbeaten heading into their matchup with fifth-ranked Michigan State this week in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. North Carolina shot 57 percent, led 53-19 at halftime and cracked the 100-point mark with about 5 minutes left.
Jason Ridenhour had eight points and six rebounds for the Bulldogs (3-3), who led 6-2 early before the Tar Heels kicked into gear and sprinted far out in front. UNC-Asheville shot 27 percent for the game, including 3-for-18 from 3-point range.
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) - Austin Freeman scored 18 points, and DaJuan Summers had 14 in No. 21 Georgetown's 75-48 victory over Maryland on Sunday in the Old Spice Classic.
Eric Hayes and Adrian Bowie had 11 points each for Maryland. The Terrapins (4-2) beat No. 5 Michigan State on Thursday and lost to ninth-ranked Gonzaga on Friday.
Jessie Sapp had 10 points as Georgetown took a 38-20 halftime lead. The Hoyas, who led by 21 points during the first half, made 10 of their first 14 shots.
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -L.D. Williams and the Wake Forest Demon Deacons pushed aside upset-minded Baylor with a complete 40-minute effort.
Williams had 15 points and 10 rebounds, and Jeff Teague added 14 points, eight rebounds and eight assists to help No. 19 Wake Forest beat Baylor 87-74 on Sunday night in the 76 Classic championship game.
James Johnson had 14 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks, and Al-Farouq Aminu finished with 13 points and 12 rebounds for the Demon Deacons (6-0). Wake Forest had a season-high 62 rebounds, 24 more than Baylor.
