Nov. 11, 2007 Maryland Overpowers North Florida, 79-50 COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) - Greivis Vasquez scored 18 and Maryland defeated North Florida, 79-50, in the first round of the O'Reilly Auto Parts CBE Classic. Maryland (1-0) advances to play Hampton (1-0) in the College Park region final Monday. North Florida (0-1) will face Tulsa (0-1) in a consolation game. The Terrapins committed 14 first-half turnovers, including 11 through the opening 14:04. But Maryland held North Florida scoreless for a stretch of 7:56 in the first half, creating a nine-point lead with a 12-0 run. Maryland was without starting forwards James Gist and Landon Milbourne. In their place, Cliff Tucker and Dave Neal made their first career starts.
Despite being without Gist, who averaged 7.2 rebounds per game as a junior, the Terrapins held a 43-26 rebounding edge over the Ospreys. Vasquez, Tucker, and Bambale Osby recorded seven rebounds each.
Virginia Downs Vermont 90-72 in Season Opener
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - Sean Singletary and Virginia didn't look especially sharp in their season-opener Sunday against Vermont, but coach Dave Leitao got to give plenty of players some minutes as the Cavaliers cruised to a 90-72 victory. Singletary had 19 points and six assists and Adrian Joseph scored 19 for the Cavaliers, who play Howard on Wednesday before heading west to play No. 17 Arizona next Saturday.
The Catamounts (0-2), denied a berth in the NCAA tournament last season despite 25 victories, were led by Marqus Blakely with 24 points and Mike Trimboli with 16.
Virginia used runs of 17-6 and 10-2 in the first half to lead 46-32 at the break, and Vermont closed within 10 in the second half before the Cavaliers pulled away.
Calvin Baker, a transfer from William & Mary who sat out last season, added 11 points in his first game for Virginia, and Mamadi Diane had 10 and eight rebounds.
Georgia Tech Downs Tennessee State 99-85 NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Alade Aminu had career highs with 25 points and nine rebounds as Georgia Tech avoided another upset Sunday night with a 99-85 win over Tennessee State. Aminu made his first seven shots to help the Yellow Jackets (1-1) turn an early scare into a highlight show, avoiding its first 0-2 start since the 1974-75 season. The Tigers (1-1) have never defeated the Yellow Jackets.
Anthony Morrow had 31 points and 10 rebounds, Jeremy Smith added 16 points for Georgia Tech, which shot 60 percent. Gerald Robinson led Tennessee State with 22 points, Jerrell Houston added 15 points and six rebounds for the Tigers, who tired late against Georgia Tech's swarming defense.
