Nov. 10, 2007 Wake Forest Honors Prosser, Wins Opener
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) - Skip Prosser surely would have been proud of this season-opening showing by Wake Forest. Harvey Hale and freshman James Johnson each scored 17 points to help the Demon Deacons rout Fairfield 85-60 Friday night in their first game since Prosser's death and in Dino Gaudio's debut as his replacement. Hale made 5-of-6 3-pointers, Johnson added 10 rebounds, L.D. Williams had 12 points and Jamie Skeen scored 10 for Wake Forest, which unveiled a banner bearing Prosser's likeness and then turned in exactly the kind of determined, disciplined play that he valued and that Gaudio vowed to maintain in Winston-Salem. The Demon Deacons (1-0) never trailed, forced 23 turnovers, scored 33 points off those miscues and used an 11-0 run early in the second half to build a 26-point lead. After Chas McFarland's free throw pushed the Wake Forest lead to 57-31 with 16:20 left, Fairfield didn't get closer than 16.
No. 13 Duke Hits 16 Three-Pointers In 121-56 Win Over N.C. Central
DURHAM, N.C. - Taylor King tossed in five three-point baskets and scored a game-high 20 points as 13th-ranked Duke opened the season with a 121-56 win over N.C. Central on Friday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Duke made 16 three-point baskets in 28 attempts on the night to match the sixth-best single-game performance in school history, falling two shy of the record of 18. The 121 points also equaled the sixth-highest single-game effort in Duke hardwood history. The Blue Devils have now won eight straight season-openers and are 79-24 overall and 26-2 under head coach Mike Krzyzewski in campaign lid-lifters. Friday's game also marked the first on the hardwood between the two Durham-based institutions. Duke never trailed in the contest, jumping out to an 11-2 lead in the first four minutes of action. After Calvin Wright's bucket pulled the Eagles to within 11-4, the Blue Devils used a 15-1 run to claim a 26-5 lead on a dunk by Lance Thomas with 12:40 remaining in the opening half. The spurt also included dunks by Kyle Singler and Gerald Henderson along with a three-pointer from Jon Scheyer.
Miami Routs Florida Southern in Opener, 104-61
CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) - Jack McClinton and James Dews each scored 15 points as Miami defeated Florida Southern 104-61 in its season opener Friday night. Dwayne Collins and Adrian Thomas each finished with 13 points. Six Hurricanes scored in double figures. The victory was Miami's most lopsided since defeating Savannah State, 105-64, on January 3, 2004, which also was the last game the Hurricanes surpassed 100 points. The game was considered an exhibition for the Moccasins since II schools cannot play regular season games until November 15. Florida Southern will open its season November 16 against Henderson State.
Florida State Routs Nicholls (La.) State 81-58 TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - It was just the kind of opener coach Leonard Hamilton wanted. Jason Rich scored 17 points and three Florida State teammates also reached doubled figures as the Seminoles opened the season with a 81-58 win over Nicholls (La.) State on Friday night. "A great game for us," Hamilton said. "We got an opportunity to play of lot of people and we didn't have a letup in our effort." Florida State (1-0) blew open a relatively close game with a 29-9 run to start the second half that put the Seminoles ahead 71-44. "We had a stretch where we were sound fundamentally," Hamilton said. "But we are by no means a finished product. We're not anywhere close and I don't think most people are."
Hokies Knock Off Elon 69-64 in Season Opener BLACKSBURG, Va. - Deron Washington and Jeff Allen recorded double-doubles, and the Hokies strung together enough free throws in the final minutes to hold off Elon 69-64 in a non-conference game played Friday night at Cassell Coliseum. The game marked the season opener for both the Hokies and Elon. Tech improved to 5-0 in season openers under coach Seth Greenberg. The Hokies led by as many as 14 in the second half and by nine with just over four minutes to go. But Tech's poor free-throw shooting and the Phoenix's barrage of 3-pointers - they hit four of their eight treys in the final 6:41 - made things tense at the end.
UNC Greensboro Surprises Georgia Tech 84-71 ATLANTA (AP) - UNC Greensboro handed another major-conference school a stunning loss, getting 25 points from Kyle Hines in an 83-74 victory over Georgia Tech on Friday night. Following the lead set by Gardner-Webb with its upset win over Kentucky, the Spartans (1-0) dominated much of the second half and easily withstood a late charge by the Yellow Jackets. Georgia Tech (0-1), an NCAA tournament team a year ago from the Atlantic Coast Conference, lost its first opener since 1993 and had not dropped an opening game at home since 1980, the start of a 4-23 season that led to the firing of coach Dwane Morrison and ushered in the Bobby Cremins era. The Yellow Jackets went to the locker room with a 43-39 lead after a seesaw first half that included 17 lead changes and nine ties. They shot only 36 percent from the field but made up for it with a dominating 27-14 edge on the boards.
