WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Devin Thomas saved the first double-double of his career for the perfect time, scoring 25 points and grabbing 14 rebounds to lead Wake Forest to an 86-84 upset of No. 18 NC State 86-84 at Lawrence Joel Coliseum on Tuesday evening.
The Wolfpack built a 12-point lead in the first half and led 47-35 going into the locker room, but the Demon Deacons dominated the second half. Two separate runs in the second half, one 9-2 and the other 12-4, powered the Deacs into the lead at the 9:55 mark.
NC State made a late run, cutting the lead to a point with one minute remaining, but the Wolfpack missed five of its last six shots, and a pair of free throws by Travis McKie with four seconds remaining sealed the victory for Wake Forest.
McKie (16), Codi Miller-McIntyre (15) and C.J. Harris (10) all joined him in double figures. Arnaud William Adala Moto fell just short of a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds. Thomas had a true stat-stuffing night, adding four assists, four blocks and three steals to his 25 points and 14 boards.
COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) - Alex Len had 16 points and 13 rebounds, Jake Layman scored 15 and Maryland squeezed past Boston College 64-59 on Tuesday night.
Maryland (15-4, 3-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) improved to 13-1 at home despite committing 14 turnovers and shooting only 42 percent. It was the Terrapins' second win in five games after a 13-1 start.
Ryan Anderson scored 19 and Oliver Hanlan had 18 for the Eagles (9-9, 1-4). Boston College has lost four of five, with those defeats coming by a total of 14 points.
During a tight second half, neither team led by more than three points until Layman made a 3-pointer to put Maryland up 48-43 with 9:12 to go, part of a 12-1 run that turned a 43-40 deficit into a 52-44 advantage.
