On April 1, 2009, Tony Bennett was introduced as the 11th head coach of Virginia’s basketball program … in three seasons at Washington State, Bennett led the Cougars to a 69-33 record, including a 32-22 mark in the Pac-10 … Washington State’s 69 wins were the most in a three-year span in school history … the 2007 consensus National Coach of the Year, Bennett led the Cougars to NCAA Tournament berths in 2007 and 2008, marking the only time that Washington State made consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances … in 2007 Bennett took a team projected to finish last in the Pac-10 and guided it to a school-record-tying 26 wins, a second-place finish in the Pac-10 with a 13-5 mark and the school’s first NCAA Tournament appearance in 13 years … was named the Pac-10 Coach of the Year and the National Coach of the Year by nine organizations, including the Associated Press, The Sporting News and the United States Basketball Writers Association … in 2008, Washington State was ranked as high as fourth in the AP poll for three weeks during the regular season and finished 26-9 overall, 11-7 in the Pac-10 … the Cougars advanced to the NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16 for the first time in school history, defeating Winthrop and Notre Dame … a year ago, Washington State finished 17-16 and made its third consecutive post-season appearance when it participated in the NIT ...
