Wake Forest returns all five starters from last season's team that finished with a 17-13 overall record and 7-9 (tied for seventh) in ACC play. The Deacons started three sophomores and two freshmen in 2007-08. Wake's victories of note last season included a homecourt win over a second-ranked Duke team and a road win at Florida State. Wake first-year head coach Dino Gaudio saw his team extend its homecourt winning streak to 16 games (dating back to the end of the 2006-07 season) before losing to Georgia Tech on Feb. 6. Despite a young lineup and new head coach, the Deacons opened last season with four straight wins and later added a six-game winning streak.
James Johnson started 28 games as a freshman. His 14.6 ppg ranked second among ACC freshmen. Johnson also led Deacons in rebounding with 8.1 per game. The three-game stretch vs. Duke, North Carolina and Maryland in late February saw Johnson average 23.7 points and 12.7 rebounds. His 16 rebounds vs. Duke were a career high.

Chas McFarland led the ACC in per-game scoring improvement (+7.7), raising his scoring average to 8.4 ppg. McFarland also averaged 5.8 rpg. He scored a career-high 28 points at Georgia Tech and contributed 17 points and 10 rebounds in win at Florida State.
Ishmael Smith has 327 assists through his first two college seasons, fifth among active players. One of five players to lead ACC in assists as a freshman (6.0 apg in 2006-07). Smith averaged 8.6 ppg last season. He had 11 assists in win over Presbyterian.
L.D. Williams averaged 8.9 ppg and 3.8 rpg last season while starting 25 games. Williams had season highs of 19 points and 13 rebounds in win over Winston-Salem State. He added 16 points in win over Air Force. Williams had started every game of his career until being forced to sit out four midseason games last year due to injury. He returned to start final six games.
