After finishing 21-14 last season and winning seven of its final 10 games, Virginia Tech is set to return nine of its top 10 players. Virginia Tech coach Seth Greenberg has been named ACC Coach of the Year two of the four years the Hokies have been members of the conference. Greenberg has guided Virginia Tech to a 43-26 record over the past two seasons and owns an 88-70 record in five years at the school. The Hokies' lone graduation loss was forward Deron Washington, who closed out his career by averaging 13.1 ppg and 6.5 rpg. The Hokies placed fourth in the ACC last season with a 9-7 league mark. Eight of their 14 losses were by six points or less, and six of those losses were by three points or less. Virginia Tech freshmen combined to average 35.1 ppg last season.
A.D. Vassallo earned second team All-ACC honors in 2007-08, averaging 16.9 ppg, 4.6 rpg and shooting .395 from 3-point range. He scored in double-figures in all but two games. Vassallo scored a season-high 27 points in a win over Georgia Tech, then matched that total in a win over Morgan State in the first round of the NIT.

Jeff Allen made a splash as a freshman by leading the team in double-doubles with 10. Allen led the Hokies in rebounding with 7.6 per game and scored at an 11.8 ppg clip. He recorded 69 steals. Allen scored a career-high 21 points in road game at Butler and pulled down 16 rebounds vs. Old Dominion.
Malcolm Delaney took on the starting point guard's role as a freshman and made an immediate impact by averaging 9.6 ppg and 3.1 apg. Delaney averaged 14.8 ppg and 3.8 apg over final five contests. He scored in double figures in each of those games. Delaney scored a career-high 20 points at North Carolina.
Hank Thorns also contributed as a freshman point guard. He started 12 games and averaged 21.1 minutes per contests and 4.6 ppg. His 113 assists led team. Thorns had season-high seven assists in win over Boston College.
Lewis Witcher started 12 games as a sophomore and averaged 2.7 ppg and 2.2 rpg. His 10-point effort helped the Hokies in an overtime win vs. Virginia.
