    Roy Williams
    Head Coach
    Roy Williams
Named the 18th head basketball coach at the University of North Carolina on April 14, 2003, Roy Williams begins his sixth season at North Carolina and 21st overall as a head coach. Williams was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame September 7, 2007.

A year ago, Williams directed the Tar Heels to a 36-3 record, a second-straight ACC title, a fifth-straight NCAA Tournament appearance, including two trips to the Final Four and a No. 1 ranking in the season’s final Associated Press poll. Williams led his alma mater to the 2005 NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship title, defeating Illinois 75-70. He earned National Coach of the Year honors by USBWA and AP and ACC Coach of the Year by ACSMA in 2005-06.

With a 560-134 (.807) career mark in 20 seasons, Williams is the winningest active coach at the Division I level. He has led his teams to 19 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. Williams is the only coach to win an NCAA Tournament game in each of the last 19 seasons - an NCAA record. In 15 seasons at the University of Kansas, Williams compiled a 418-101 (.805) record and directed the Jayhawks to 14 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances - the fourth-longest streak by a coach in NCAA Tournament history. At Kansas, Williams earned National Coach of the Year honors in 1990, 1991, 1992 and 1997 and was a seven-time Big Eight/Big 12 Coach of the Year selection.

He was an assistant coach under Dean Smith at Carolina for 10 seasons (1978-88).
