Terps Sizzling In Summer Baseball Play
July 22, 2003 The motto of the Cape Cod Baseball League reads, "Where the Stars of Tomorrow Shine Tonight." If there is any truth to that saying, than the Terrapin baseball team should have a tremendous asset patrolling its outfield next season. Rising junior Justin Maxwell is terrorizing opposing pitchers, leading the league with a .351 batting average and a .435 on-base percentage. In addition, his 40 hits are good enough for second-best in the league. The Maryland-native leads the Bourne Braves with nine stolen bases, 16 runs scored and 14 walks, and is second on the team with 13 runs batted in. Tremendous numbers have earned him the starting nod in the upcoming all-star game on July 26 in Falmouth, Mass. All-star game invitations were also handed out to Will Frazier and Sean Kane, teammates with the Durham Americans of the Coastal Plains League. Frazier is the only player in the lineup to start every game this season and leads Durham with a .280 batting average and 22 runs batted in. He is tied for first on the squad with 35 hits and three home runs. Throwing in the mid-90s, Kane, a powerful right-handed pitcher, appears poised to make a serious impact in the Terrapin rotation next spring. As of the all-star break, the imposing hurler boasts an ERA of 1.88 to go along with a 2-1 record in 43 innings pitched. Opponents are batting a measly .154 against him and have fanned 40 times. Terp infielder Mike Costantino will take part in the New England Collegiate Baseball League all-star game on July 27 in Concord, N.H. The rising sophomore is hitting .279 and leading the Riverpoint Royals in runs scored (15), hits (34), runs batted in (17) and total bases (50).
The Terrapins will enter their fourth season of the Terry Rupp era in the spring of 2004.
