Duke second baseman Bryan Smith and pitcher Paul DeMarco helped the Valley League Northern Division All-Stars to a 15-8 victory over the Southern Division All-Stars at John Moxie Stadium in Staunton, Va., Sunday night. Smith earned Most Valuable Player honors after going 1-for-2 with a walk, two runs scored and a game-high three runs batted in.
Smith, the All-Star Game's starting second baseman and a member of the Front Royal Cardinals, was a late addition to the Northern Division roster, replacing an injured teammate last week. The Longwood, Fla., native hit .280 with 13 doubles, three home runs and 31 RBIs as a sophomore last season and was one of just two players to start all 58 games for the Blue Devils.
DeMarco, who was 3-4 with a 5.49 ERA as a freshman last season, pitched 1.0 scoreless inning in relief for the Northern Division, striking out one. He is 2-2 with a 3.64 ERA and 24 strikeouts in seven starts for Front Royal this summer.
