![]() Updating Former Terps In Minor League Baseball
July 10, 2003 This year, there is no summer vacation for Steve Schmoll (Rockville, Md.) or Kyle George. Instead, midway through July the two former Terrapins find themselves relishing their new roles as professional baseball players. Schmoll, the ace of the Maryland pitching staff last season, is now playing with the Ogden Raptors, the Pinoeer League affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers, whom he signed a contract with in May. Currently, he is 1-1 with a 5.93 ERA and 24 strikeouts, in 13.2 innings of work. Opposing batters are hitting a paltry .204 against him. Glancing over the statistical leaders of the Bluefield Orioles, it is difficult to bypass Kyle George's name. George is among the team leaders in virtually every offensive category, including runs scored (14), home runs (3), walks (17) and on-base percentage (.418). The Eastern League (AA) is home to three more former Terps. Tied for third on the team with a .302 batting average, Kevin Haverbusch (1995-1998) has helped his Portland Sea Dogs (Red Sox) capture first place in the Northern division. Moreover, he is second on the Sea Dogs with a .490 slugging percentage and a .407 on-base percentage. Outfielder Garry Maddox (1993-1996) has been tearing it up as of late for the Reading Phillies (Phillies). Home runs in three of his last five games have helped boost his average to a team-best .322. In addition, he is leading the club in both slugging (.645) and on-base percentage (.410). Pitcher Brandon Agamennone (1995-1998) is 1-0 with a stifling 2.01 earned run average in 22.1 innings of work with the Bowie Baysox (Orioles). In his second year with the Kane County Cougars (A's), John McCurdy (2000-2002), who retains several single-season batting records at Maryland, continues to be a hitting machine, cranking out 80 hits for second-most on the squad. Kevin McDonald (1999-2002) is with the Gulf Coast League Tigers and is hitting .235 with two runs batted in.
