Kansas City, Mo. -- Former Wake Forest All-American Mike MacDougal was named to the American League All-Star team on Sunday night. MacDougal, a first round draft pick for the Royals in 1999, helped lead the Demon Deacons to back-to-back ACC Championships in 1998 and 1999.

MacDougal, a starter during his college days and first three years as a professional, ranks among the American League leaders in saves. He owns a 3-3 record with a 2.72 ERA and 24 saves. His performance has enabled Kansas City to race into first place in the AL Central.

MacDougal is the second Royals rookie to be named an All-Star. Kevin Seitzer made it as a rookie in 1987. The third baseman batted .323 during his rookie campaign with 15 home runs.

"This is awesome," MacDougal told MLB.com. "It's hard to put it into words. I hadn't really thought much about it before now because I didn't really know it was a possibility. This is something I'll remember forever."
