Duke Baseball Summer Notebook
July 2, 2003 Six current Duke baseball players are competing in collegiate leagues this summer. Four Blue Devils -- Michael Golom, Lee Lawrence, Adam Murray and Javier Socorro -- are playing in the New England Collegiate Baseball League. Blake Walker is playing in the Coastal Plain League and Brian Hernandez is playing in the Cape Cod Baseball League. Ten former Blue Devils are continuing their careers in pro baseball, including major leaguers Quinton McCracken and Scott Schoeneweis. CURRENT BLUE DEVILS IN SUMMER BASEBALL New England Collegiate Baseball League INF Michael Golom, Riverpoint: Is hitting .258 in nine games for the Riverpoint Royals in West Warwick, R.I. INF Lee Lawrence, Riverpoint: Leads the Riverpoint Royals with eight RBIs and is tied for the team lead with four doubles while hitting .263 in 11 starts INF Adam Murray, Thread City: Has started 16 games for the Thread City Tides in Mansfield Center, Conn. OF Javier Socorro, Newport: Is hitting .258 while starting all 15 games for the Newport Gulls in Newport, R.I. Leads the team with eight stolen bases and is second on the squad with 17 hits and seven runs (tied) Coastal Plain League RHP Blake Walker, Edenton: Is fourth on the team with a 4.28 ERA and tied for second on the team with 27.1 innings pitched for the Edenton Steamers in Edenton, N.C. Is 0-2 with 18 strikeouts and just six walks in six games, including two starts Cape Cod Baseball League C Brian Hernandez, Falmouth: Has started all 16 games for the Falmouth Commodores in Mashpee, Mass. Is second on the team with eight walks BLUE DEVILS IN THE PROS Jeff Alleva (Duke, 2000-03): Signed with the Kansas City Royals in June and has begun his career in Phoenix, Ariz. J.D. Alleva (1998-2001): Is batting .245 with two doubles and two home runs for the Class A Wilmington Blue Rocks in the Kansas City Royals organization Larry Broadway (2000-02): Leads the Class A Savannah Sand Gnats (Montreal Expos) in doubles (22), home runs (14), RBIs (49), runs scored (52) and walks (42) and is second in batting average (.310). Named to the South Atlantic League All-Star Team and won the SAL Home Run Derby Chris Capuano (1997-99): Is 6-0 with a 2.77 ERA in 13 starts for the Class AAA Tucson Sidewinders (Arizona Diamondbacks). Has 56 strikeouts and just 20 walks in 78.0 innings pitched. Made his major league debut with the Diamondbacks in May Troy Caradonna (2000-03): Signed with the New York Yankees in June and is playing for the Class A Staten Island Yankees Ryan Jackson (1991-94): Is batting .279 with team-high 25 doubles, four triples and seven home runs for the Class AAA Durham Bulls (Tampa Bay Devil Rays). Also has 33 RBIs and team-best 47 runs scored Kevin Kelly (1999-2002): Is batting .258 with three doubles and two home runs for the Class A Hagerstown Suns in the San Francisco Giants organization Quinton McCracken (1989-92): Batting .200 in 57 games for the Arizona Diamondbacks Brian Patrick (2000-03): Is batting .226 in 12 games with the Class A Auburn Doubledays after being drafted in the 25th round by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 2003 MLB Draft Scott Schoeneweis (1993-96): Is 1-0 with a 4.94 ERA in 31 games for the Anaheim Angels. Has 20 strikeouts and eight walks in 27.1 innings pitched out of the bullpen for the defending World Series champions
