Virginia's Sean Doolittle Makes 2005 USA Baseball National Team
July 1, 2005 CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - University of Virginia baseball player Sean Doolittle (Tabernacle, N.J./Shawnee) became the second Cavalier in as many years to make the Team USA Baseball squad when he earned a spot on the 22-man roster for the 2005 USA Baseball National Team - the governing body of amateur baseball in the United States. The selections were announced today (Friday) after a four-day trials period in which 39 players participated at Doak Field on the campus of North Carolina State University from June 27-30. Last year, UVa's Ryan Zimmerman made the 2004 USA Baseball National Team. Team USA begins competition on Saturday, July 2nd at 7:00 PM against the Torrington Twisters at Fuessenich Park in Torrington, Conn. After two more games against teams from the NECBL, Team USA will travel to Japan to participate in the 34th annual USA vs. Japan Collegiate All-Star Series on July 7-12. The Americans will be looking to capture the series overseas for the first time since 1979. Team USA will also play a five-game series in Taiwan on July 15-19 before returning to the United States for series against Italy (July 22-27) and Nicaragua (July 29-August 4). The 2005 USA Baseball National Team is coached by Steve Smith (Baylor) with assistants John Cohen (Kentucky), Rob Walton (Oral Roberts) and Tim Jamieson (Missouri). Jamieson replaces Dave Van Horn of Arkansas, who had been named to the 2005 coaching staff earlier this year. Doolittle, a first baseman/left-handed pitcher for the Cavaliers, was recently named to the 2005 Baseball America All-Freshman Team as a First Team Freshman All-American selection and was named a 2005 Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American. Aside from gaining All-American status in 2005, Doolittle was also named a Second Team All-ACC and an ACC All-Tournament Team selection. Doolittle developed into one of Virginia's top players in 2005 and posed as a two-way threat on the mound and at the plate. Doolittle started 59 of the 60 games he appeared in during the 2005 season and batted .313 (second on the team) with 70 hits, 57 RBI and 36 runs. Doolittle's 70 hits, 57 RBI, .522 slugging percentage and 117 total bases were second on the team to only teammate Ryan Zimmerman - who was recently drafted as the #4 overall draft pick in the first round of the 2005 MLB Draft by the Washington Nationals. Doolittle hit a team-high 11 home runs (including one grand slam), 12 doubles (third on the team) and one triple. He was also successful on 7-of-11 stolen base attempts. The southpaw also made 22 appearances and one start on the mound and posted a record of 3-2 with a 1.64 ERA. He struck out 66 batters (third on the team) in 49.1 innings of action and held opposing hitters to a .186 batting average and allowed just four extra base hits all season. Doolittle's 1.64 ERA ranks seventh in school history for lowest ERA in a single season.
