Larry Broadway Wins South Atlantic League Home Run Derby
June 30, 2003 Former Duke first baseman Larry Broadway won the Home Run Derby at the South Atlantic League All-Star Game on June 24 in Lexington, Ky. Broadway was drafted in the third round of the 2002 Major League Baseball Draft by the Montreal Expos after his junior year at Duke and is currently playing for the Class A Savannah Sand Gnats. Broadway, who leads the SAL in slugging percentage and extra-base hits and is tied for second in home runs, was one of 10 players selected to participate in the Home Run Derby as part of the All-Star festivities. In the first round of the derby, each player was given 10 "outs." Any ball that did not go over the fence was considered an out. With two home runs in the first round, Broadway and the Rome Braves' Jeff Francour advanced to the finals. Francour led off the final round with three home runs before tallying 10 "outs." Broadway followed with four home runs to win the competition.
Broadway played for the Blue Devils from 2000-02 and ranks among Duke's career leaders in batting average (12th, .324), doubles (14th, 44) and home runs (T14th, 17).
