Bakker and Patterson Named to 22-man USA Baseball Team
June 24, 2002 ATLANTA - Georgia Tech sophomore pitcher Kyle Bakker and freshman second baseman Eric Patterson are among 22 collegiate players named to the 2002 USA Baseball National Team. The USA National Team was selected from a pool of 35 players that just completed a four-day trials process at Hi Corbett Field in Tucson, Ariz. A second-team all-America selection, Bakker was the ace of the Tech pitching staff in 2002 after posting a 13-2 record and a 3.14 ERA. The 6-9 southpaw led the Yellow Jackets in wins, ERA, innings pitched (134.2) and strikeouts (115). Bakker was even more impressive in Tech's run to the College World Series, posting a 3-0 record and a microscopic 0.75 ERA in three starts in the NCAA Tournament. A third-team all-America and first-team Freshman all-America, Patterson hit .346 and stole 41 bases as Tech's leadoff hitter. His 41 steals stand as the second highest single season total in school history and were the most since Ty Griffin swiped 50 bases in 1986. Patterson started 65 of 68 games in 2002, ranking second on the team with 90 hits and 73 runs scored.
