June 23, 2003

Former Duke standout Larry Broadway has been selected to the South Atlantic Leauge Southern Division All-Star Team. He will represent the Savannah Sand Gnats in the SAL All-Star Game June 24 in Lexington, Ky. Broadway is second on the team with a .307 batting average and leads the Sand Gnats in home runs (14), doubles (19), RBIs (48), runs (50) and walks (42) at the All-Star Break. He took time to answer some questions for GoDuke.com.

What has been the biggest adjustment from college to pro baseball?

"In pro ball, you know that you are going to play every single day. It is a lot more difficult on your body and mind. You have to be able to get mentally ready for a game every day, which is difficult. Also, you have to be able to detach yourself from your results on the field or else they will eat you up."

What do you miss most about Duke University?

"Cosmic Cantina."

What is your favorite memory from Duke - on and off the field?

"On the field - hitting a home run off my buddy Scott Autrey from UNC my junior year. Off the field - the last day I played the Duke golf course with my roommates, and the last hole I played I was on the green in two on the par five putting for eagle. To this day it is still my only eagle putt."

Talk about continuing your education at Duke and when you expect to graduate. What will your degree be in?

"I will be finishing up my degree this fall with a degree in sociology and a certificate in markets and management studies."

What has been the highlight of your minor league career so far?

"Hitting a home run in my first professional at bat."

Note: Broadway became the first player in Vermont Expos history to hit a home run in his first career at bat on June 18, 2002.

What did it mean to you to be named to the SAL All-Star Team?

"It is an awesome honor to be named to an all-star team. It's something that you work towards as an individual goal every year, and it's awesome to be recognized as one of the best players in the league."

Who is the toughest pitcher you've faced this year?

"Scott Kazmir, last year's first-round pick for the New York Mets."

What is your favorite road trip in the South Atlantic League and why?

"Charleston, S.C., because it's only a couple-hour trip, the field is nice and the town is a lot of fun."

Who has had the biggest influence on your baseball career?

"My father."
