![]() Fifty-four ACC Players Taken in MLB Draft

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Fifty-four Atlantic Coast Conference players were selected in last week's Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, including five first-round selections. The 54 total picks is the second highest ever for the ACC, which saw a record 63 players selected in 2007. NC State led all ACC schools with a school-record nine selections and Virginia matched its all-time high with six. Miami had eight players selected, including first-round choices in first baseman Yonder Alonso (seventh overall to Cincinnati), second baseman Jemile Weeks (12th to Oakland) and pitcher Carlos Guttierez (27th to Minnesota). The ACC's other first-round selections were Florida State catcher Buster Posey, who went fifth overall to the San Francisco Giants and was the first ACC player taken, and Wake Forest first baseman Allan Dykstra (23rd to San Diego). Florida State and Georgia Tech each had seven players drafted, and six North Carolina players were taken. A total of 680 ACC players have been selected in the last 20 Major League Drafts (1989-2008).
