GOOD THINGS COME IN THREES: MIAMI, UNC, FLORIDA STATE
The ACC's three seeded teams -- No. 1 Miami, No. 2 North Carolina and No. 4 Florida State -- are among the eight-team field for the 2008 NCAA Men's College World Series. The national-best three participants gives the ACC multiple teams in the MCWS for the seventh time and for the first time since 2006, when a record four conference teams (Clemson, Georgia Tech, Miami and North Carolina) made the trip to Omaha.
Noting the ACC in the College World Series
- Florida State will be competing in the Men's College World Series for the 19th time and for the first time since 2000. The Seminoles are seeking their first national title but have placed second on three occasions.
- Miami seeks its fifth national title and its first since joining the ACC prior to the 2005 season. The Hurricanes will be making their 23rd MCWS appearance overall and their second since joining the ACC.
- North Carolina is back in the Men's College World Series for the third straight year after finishing the national runner-up in both 2006 and 2007. Florida State (1994-96) and (1998-2000) is the only other ACC program to reach the MCWS three straight years. Miami reached Omaha six straight years from 1994-99, five straight years from 1978-82 and three straight years from 1984-86, but each of those runs occurred before the Hurricanes joined the ACC.
- The three teams in this year's MCWS field give the ACC a total of 34 in 55 seasons (1954-2008). The conference's current 12 member teams now own a combined 69 MCWS berths. Wake Forest (1955) owns the ACC's lone title.
- With a 46-36 record, Miami is one of two current ACC teams with an all-time winning record in the Men's College World Series. Wake Forest (7-3 in two appearances) is the other. NC State broke even (2-2) during its only appearance in 1968.
