The ACC's three top-five nationally seeded teams are moving on to Super Regional play as host teams this week ... No. 3 North Carolina opens play against Stanford on Friday ... No. 1 Virginia opens against UC Irvine on Saturday ... No. 5 Florida State also gets into action on Saturday against Texas A&M .... This marks the fourth straight year and the sixth time in seven years that at least three ACC teams have reached the Super Regional round ... ACC teams posted a combined 16-8 record in the NCAA Regionals ... Conference teams have won at least 25 postseason games four of the past five years ... The 2011 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft saw four ACC players selected in the opening round (Virginia pitcher Danny Hultzen second overall to Seattle), Georgia Tech pitcher Jed Bradley 15th to Milwaukee, Florida State pitcher Sean Gilmartin 28th to Atlanta, and North Carolina shortstop Levi Michael 30th to Minnesota) ... 3 - ACC teams among the top five national seeds of the 2011 NCAA Division I Championship field (Virginia No. 1, North Carolina No. 3 and Florida State No. 5). All three will host Super Regionals this weekend.
4 - ACC players selected in the first round of the June 6 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. At least one student-athlete from an ACC program has been taken in the first round of each of the last 20 MLB Drafts, and the conference has boasted multiple first-round selections in 10 of the last 11 years.
15 - North Carolina has compiled a 15-0 record in the last five NCAA Regionals in which it has been the host team.
16 - Postseason wins by ACC teams entering the NCAA Super Regionals. The conference record for NCAA wins in a single postseason is 31 in 2006, when four ACC teams reached the College World Series.
27 - NCAA Regional Championships by Florida State, which will be bidding for its 21st trip to the College World Series this weekend.
31 - In his three years at Virginia, ACC Pitcher of the Year Danny Hultzen is 31-5 with a 2.18 ERA - tops among current ACC pitchers with 100 or more career innings pitched.
33 - Florida State pitcher Sean Gilmartin's 33 career wins leads all active ACC pitchers and ties him for fourth among all active pitchers nationally.
52 - With 52 wins thus far, ACC Coach of the Year Brian O'Connor of Virginia's team owns the school record for wins in a season, topping the previous mark of 51 set last season.
69 - ACC Freshman of the Year and Conference RBI leader Colin Moran of North Carolina is just the fourth freshman in school history to drive in at least 60 runs in a season. Moran has driven in 69 runs in 62 games.
ACC Teams in NCAA Super Regionals
Virginia (52-9) allowed three runs during the entire NCAA Charlottesville Regional (Navy - 0, St. John's - 2, East Carolina - 1) ... That tied for the second-fewest number of runs allowed in an NCAA Regional since the tournament went to a 64-team format in 1999, matching Arizona State in 2003 ... UVa yielded two runs in the 2009 NCAA Irvine Regional, the fewest number of runs under the current NCAA regional format ... Virginia pitchers struck out 42 batters in three regional games, just over half of the possible 81 outs ... The Cavaliers head into Super Regional play this week already holding the school record for wins in a season with 52.
#3 North Carolina
With a 3-0 record in the NCAA Chapel Hill Regional, UNC picked up its 35th postseason win since 2006, which leads the nation ... Oregon State is second with 28 wins during that stretch ... Since the NCAA changed to a 64-team tournament in 1999, UNC has hosted five regionals (four in Chapel Hill, one in Cary, N.C.) and is 15-0 as the host institution ... UNC has won the last 14 postseason games it hosted ... The Tar Heels last lost as a host in Game 2 of the 2007 Chapel Hill Super Regional (South Carolina, 8-6) ... UNC catcher Jacob Stallings has thrown out a school-record 31 baserunners this season on attempted steals.
#5 Florida State
The Seminoles (45-17) are in the NCAA Tournament for the 49th time, second-most nationally ... FSU is appearing in postseason play for the 34th consecutive year, second only to Miami's run of 39 straight NCAA appearances ... This year's NCAA Regional title is the Seminoles' 27th all-time, and they are seeking to reach the College World Series for the 21st time ... FSU outscored its Tallahassee Regional opponents (Bethune-Cookman and Alabama, twice) 26-11 and out-hit them 45-27... The Seminoles established new single-game season highs with 19 hits and 7 doubles in their 11-1 win over Alabama that clinched the regional title.
ACC Teams with Seasons Completed
BC honored its senior class prior to its final game vs. visiting NC State on May 21 ... In four seasons, the class played a part in 107 wins and helped the Eagles reach their first two ACC Championships and the program's first NCAA Tournament berth in 42 years in 2009 ... The New England weather took its toll on the Eagles' schedule this season as BC (17-33 overall, 7-22 ACC) played only 14 games on its true home field ... six games were canceled, including one game of an ACC weekend series vs. Miami ... the Eagles again traveled extensively in February and March, logging nearly 10,500 total miles before playing their first home game.
The Tigers (43-20) made their 24th NCAA appearance in 25 years and their 36th overall ... Clemson won 29 of 35 games during one stretch and earned a No. 1 regional seed after a 14-12 start to the season ... ACC Player of the Year Brad Miller hit over .400 most of the season and finished his season leading the conference at .395 ... Jack Leggett, who has coached for 32 seasons, is just 11 wins shy of reaching 1,200 for his career ... Leggett reached his 800th win at Clemson and 300th ACC regular-season win during the 2011 campaign ... senior Jeff Schaus finished as the ACC active leader in games played (258), at-bats (973), hits (311) and doubles (61).
The Blue Devils (26-30, 7-23) could potentially return 26 of 27 letter winners in 2012, including nine of 10 position starters and 11 pitchers ... C/DH Jeff Kremer led Duke offensively during the past season, batting .347 to rank eighth among ACC hitters ... Right-hander Marcus Stroman (3-4, 2.80) finished with 90 strikeouts in 64.1 innings ... Stroman's 12.59 strikeouts per nine innings ranked third nationally and second in the conference only to ACC Pitcher of the Year Danny Hultzen of Virginia ... The baseball team was one of seven Duke programs that achieved perfect scores of 1000 on the annual Academic Progress Report (APR) released by the NCAA
The Yellow Jackets, who ended their season with a 42-21 overall record and tied for the best record in ACC regular-season play at 22-8, appeared in the NCAA Tournament for the fourth straight year and the 25th time in the last 27 years ... Georgia Tech 3B Matt Skole, DH Daniel Palka and C Zane Evans were named to the NCAA Atlanta Regional All-Tournament Team ... Yellow Jackets' head coach Danny Hall recorded his 300th regular-season ACC win during the 2011 season, joining FSU coach Mike Martin, the late Bill Wilhelm of Clemson and current Clemson coach Jack Leggett as the only coaches to reach that milestone.
The Terps (21-35) were led offensively at the plate in 2011 by freshman Charlie White ... White started 46 of the 51 games in which he appeared and hit a team-high .304 ... Jake Stinnett's five home runs led the team, and Ryan Holland paced the Terps in RBI with 30 ... junior Alfredo Rodriguez led the way in stolen bases with 20 in 27 attempts ... Rodriguez now has 46 stolen bases for his career, tying him for fourth among active ACC players ... David Carroll (5-5) led the Terps in wins and was named the National Pitcher of the Week by College Baseball 360 on April 5 following his strong effort in a 5-0 shutout of Florida State.
Miami wrapped up a 38-23 season after competing in the NCAA Championship field for the 39th consecutive year, extending its own national record ... the Hurricanes made their 40th postseason appearance overall ... milestones during the 2011 season included Jim Morris' 800th win as head coach at Miami ... Morris ended the season with 814 victories in 18 years with the Hurricanes and 1,318 wins in 30 years as a college coach overall ... sophomore second baseman Zeke DeVoss, who closed the season on a 10-game hitting streak, led the Hurricanes offensively in 2011 with a .340 batting average and an ACC-leading 32 stolen bases.
The Wolfpack, which finished the year at 35-27, returned to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year and the eighth time in the past nine seasons ... NC State made its 24th postseason appearance overall ... In his last three starts of the season, junior pitcher Cory Mazzoni allowed two runs on 11 hits in 23 innings, with 32 strikeouts and two walks ... Mazzoni allowed just three earned runs in his last 29 innings pitched and reached double figures in strikeouts a school-record seven times ... Mazzoni had at least as many strikeouts as innings pitched in 12 of his 16 starts this season, including each of his last six.
Sophomore Andrew Rash became just the fifth Hokie to be named either the first- or second-team All-ACC in the school's seven years in the league ... Rash joined former teammate Austin Wates (2010) as the only Tech players to be named first team ... Rash led all ACC players with 18 regular-season home runs, seven more than the next-closest hitter ... The 18 home runs were the most by a Hokie since Kevin Barker hit 20 in 1996 ... senior Michael Seaborn started the last 149 games of his college career at second base ... Seaborn, Tim Smalling and Ronnie Shaban all registered their 200th career hits during the 2011 season.
Wake Forest (25-31) opened the season making national headlines as head coach Tom Walter courageously donated a kidney to freshman player Kevin Jordan ... The end of the regular season saw the Demon Deacons finish strong on the field, winning eight of their final nine conference games to earn a spot in the ACC Championship for the first time since 2008 ... Mac Williamson led Wake Forest in batting (.273), home runs (12) and RBIs (49) ... Steven Brooks finished his collegiate career with 79 stolen bases and ranks tied with former Florida State star Tyler Holt for 24th on the all-time ACC list.
