June 8, 2004

Duke senior Zach Schreiber was selected in the 16th round of the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft on Monday by the Atlanta Braves. A right-handed pitcher, Schreiber was the second Blue Devil hurler chosen in the draft, joining junior Tim Layden, a sixth-round selection of the Chicago Cubs.

Schreiber led Duke with 92.0 innings pitched in 2004 and led all Blue Devil starters with a 4.60 ERA. He ranked second on the team and ninth in the Atlantic Coast Conference with 79 strikeouts while limiting opponents to a .275 batting average. A native of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Schreiber finished his collegiate career ranked third on Duke's all-time list with 84 appearances and 13th with 172 strikeouts.

Schreiber is the fifth Blue Devil drafted in the last three years. Schreiber and Layden were selected on Monday. Brian Patrick represented Duke in the 2003 MLB Draft while Blue Devils Larry Broadway and Kevin Kelly were chosen in 2002.
