GREENSBORO, N.C. - The opening day of the 2008 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft saw 16 Atlantic Coast Conference players chosen, including five first-round selections.

Top-ranked Miami led conference teams with six selections, including three first-round picks. Virginia had three first-day selections - a third-round pick and two fifth-round choices

Thursday's opening round saw three ACC players drafted among the first 12. Florida State catcher Buster Posey went fifth overall to the San Francisco Giants, and the Cincinnati Reds made Miami first baseman Yonder Alonso the seventh selection. Miami second baseman Jemile Weeks went 12th overall to the Oakland Athletics.

Wake Forest first baseman Allan Dykstra went 23rd overall to the San Diego Padres, and the Minnesota Twins made Miami pitcher Carlos Gutierrez the No. 27 pick.

The ACC had three players selected in the opening round of the 2007 draft (not including supplemental selections). The five ACC players chosen in this year's first round are the most since 2005, when five players were also selected. A record six players were chosen in 1994.

This marks the 17th straight year the ACC has had at least one player chosen in the first round of the June draft, and the conference has seen multiple selections seven of the past eight years.

Thursday's second round saw Miami outfielder Dennis Raben taken by the Seattle Mariners as the 66th overall pick, and the Colorado Rockies selected Georgia Tech outfielder Charlie Blackmon (72nd).

Miami outfielder Blake Tekotte went in the third round to the San Diego Padres (101st overall). Virginia second baseman David Adams went five picks later (106th) to the New York Yankees.

Miami was again represented in the fourth round when third baseman Mark Sobolewski went to the Toronto Blue Jays as the 129th overall pick.

NC State pitcher Clayton Shunick went to the Cincinnati Reds (149th) and the Houston Astros made Georgia Tech pitcher David Duncan the 152nd selection. Virginia pitcher Jacob Thompson went to the Atlanta Braves at No. 160 overall.

Another NC State pitcher went in Round 6, as the San Francisco Giants made Eric Surkamp the 177th overall choice. Florida State shortstop Tony Delmonico went 187th to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
