NC State vs. North Carolina Quotes

May 24, 2003

NC State Head Coach Elliott Avent
This is the best ball club that I have been around in a long time. This ball club, win or lose that game, this club plays with more heart and more competitive spirit than I have ever had. I am so proud of these guys I don't know what to do. It was a heck of a game and North Carolina is a very good baseball club.

(On every player stepping up for the team)
It has been that way all year. If you have a true team, I think that is the way it should be. I don't think any 2, 3 or 4 people are going to carry you to a Championship. It has got to be a team effort and it has been that way all year.

(On Chad Orvella's power)
He is a good hitter and this is a tough game. You fight yourself throughout the season and I know he has had to fight with himself this year. He has a lot of confidence right now and he knows that he is a good hitter and he is getting the job done.

NC State Shortstop Chad Orvella
(On playing North Carolina and his homerun)
This is a great feeling. I am not from North Carolina so when I came here last year people told me about this rivalry. It is a huge rivalry. They are a great time. I just got lucky enough to get a slider that was hung a little bit and was able to hit it out.

North Carolina Head Coach Mike Fox
We play at 9:30 am tomorrow and we have to regroup. It was a tough loss - they are all tough at this time of the year. It was a great college game. You have to give credit to (Joey) Devine, he was good at the end. We have to regroup and move on. I like our chances. We may all be in the same boat tomorrow with a loss and just be trying to survive.

(On the rivalry between North Carolina and NC State)
It's a good rivalry. We're right down the road from one another. The kids know each other and it's usually pretty intense. We play clean and respect one another. It is usually a great college game.

(On NC State Pitcher Joey Devine)
He's the real deal. Don't let anyone tell you that he's just a freshman. He's got great stuff. We were hoping he would run out of gas and lose a little velocity. He could smell it after the home run (Chad Orvella's solo home run in the top of the tenth inning), you could tell. He's a competitor. You take an arm like that and put it on a kid with that kind of competitive nature and you've got a heck of a closer.
