Florida State Head Coach Mike Martin
We had a lot of excitement today. The defensive plays, the play their left fielder made on Jerrod Brown was a top 10 on Sports Center. We were just very pleased with the way Daniel (Davidson) pitched today. It was one of his better outings and he said the best of his last four. We are very pleased with the way he moved his fastball around and really kept Virginia off-balance all day long. It was just a tremendous job of pitching.
(Thoughts on last night versus today)
Last night was a great baseball game. We played well, but North Carolina played better. It was easy to go to sleep. We got beat. We didn't kick the ball around or give them runs. I am glad we were able to play again. I am just blessed to have a group of young men who are not satisfied. They want to win no matter what the odds. They want to compete and that was evident today. It was a big lift what Daniel did for us and it is a great advantage when you have a Tony Richie running the show.
Florida State Pitcher Daniel Davidson
(On his last outing vs. this outing)
I wanted to get some momentum today going into regionals. This time of the year you have to step up and be your best. I told myself that last night. Especially after we had the loss to North Carolina on a good game that I needed to go out and give my team a boost by throwing good pitches against a good hitting team. Today I came out and was fortunate to get guys out and our team put the runs up.
(On when he realized he was having a good game)
I realized it about the third inning. When I was hitting with my change-up and curveball and still being able to locate my fastball with that. I was getting a lot of ground ball outs and when I get those I feel like I am pitching well that day.
Florida State Catcher Tony Richie
(On the win)
We did a great job today, but you have to tip your hat to their pitcher (Andrew Dobies). He did a great job of keeping us off-balance today. You do need the big hits with two outs. Like coach always says, it's the two out hits that win ballgames. And it did today.
Virginia Head Coach Dennis Womack
Andrew (Dobies) gave us great opportunities today. This game was all together different from yesterday in terms of pitching and defense. We knew we had to do well at those two things and we had a couple of great defensive plays. (Andrew) Dobies just about matched (Daniel) Davidson pitch for pitch. You really have to take your hat off to Florida State, they execute. They didn't mess anything up. If they had an opportunity to get a sacrifice fly or get a guy in, and they didn't have many chances to do it, they got the run in. It's a tough loss for us. The trademark of UVa's team is that we will battle until the very last strike. We just came up short, but again, I tip my hat off to Florida State.
(On receiving an invitation to the NCAA Tournament)
First of all, I think that if you take a look at our schedule, I suspect our RPI will be in the neighborhood of the low twenties. Also, we really have not had a bad loss. All of them are bad, but realistically, all of our losses have come to ranked teams. I think we're going to be able to throw the ball, pitch with anybody. Normally, we have good defense, I think yesterday was an aberration, but our stats show what we've done. They (the NCAA Selection Committee) probably won't take into consideration that we lost seven or eight games to the snow and rain, not that I'm saying that we would have won all of those games, but on paper you have to say that we have a chance.
My gut tells me that things around the country would absolutely have to break perfectly for us to get in. They will have to look around and say okay, all of the favorites have won in their brackets, everything is falling in, now we need a couple of good at-large teams. I don't think they would have to look around much to find one. I don't know if it hurts that we'd probably be the sixth team taken out of the ACC. I think that most people who have played us would say to you that yeah, we're one of the top 64 teams in the country. But, I think we have to be pretty fortunate. The club has had to battle through some adversity, but I don't know how the committee looks at that.
Virginia Pitcher Andrew Dobies
(On today's game)
I felt I pitched pretty decent, but I am disappointed. Davidson pitched great. I just have to roll with the punches, it was a tough one.
(On receiving an invitation to the NCAA Tournament)
We're just going day to day. The seniors especially want to keep playing. We feel like we have a chance, that we're a legitimate team and that we can do it.
