North Carolina vs. Florida State Postgame Quotes

May 23, 2003

North Carolina Head Coach Mike Fox:
We are thrilled to have won. We beat an outstanding Florida State team. I thought it was a great college baseball game. Great pitching and there were some key hits for us there at the end. Two of our seniors in Chad (Prosser) and Sean (Farrell) stepped up for us and Adam (Kalkhof) on the mound showed on poise for us all year long. He has had some big starts for us, especially in a game where we weren't doing a lot offensively off of (Trent) Peterson. When you are not doing much offensively you better hope you are holding the other team down. I credit our team for staying with it and battling. I am very proud of our guys. We are very happy to have won the second game and we will go from there.

Winning the second one is extremely important. These guys knew that the losing team was going to have to get up at seven tomorrow morning. I don't think they want to do that again. We have been in this situation before. Last year we won the first game and dropped the next two. This is the first time in Sean's career where we have won two games in the ACC Tournament. That is important to us as anything else. We aren't satisfied with that. We know how good the teams are that are left here and we still have our work cut out for us.

North Carolina Leftfielder Sean Farrell
(On his last at-bat)
I was pretty much just trying to get a base hit. Almost everything that Rhett James throws is a cutter and he got ahead with a good pitch right off of the bat. I got down in the count a little and I had a guy on second that I was trying to score. I battled one pitch off the outside corner just to stay alive. I managed to get around on that last pitch to hit it where there was a gap to score the winning run.

(On his 4-5 performance)
It was a little bit of luck. Last time we played these guys I tried a couple of bunts for hits. I wasn't very good at it earlier in the year but as it comes down toward the end of the season, I have been using it really well. I think that was a good start to get us going. Chris Iannetta came up and hit a big double to respond after we got down early. Peterson was throwing really well, he mixes everything really well. Every at bat it was a battle, but I got lucky a couple of times. Later in the game I was sitting on his off speed stuff and I was able to get a good piece on his change-up and drive it into the gap. We were able to respond right after that. I was just trying to do what I can for the team.

Florida State Head Coach Mike Martin:
That obviously was a tough one, but it was a great baseball game. Everybody here saw two very good clubs trying to get it done. One club got it done and one didn't. Credit the University of North Carolina. They did a tremendous job getting it done in the tenth inning. They got their leadoff hitter on. When he picked the guy off of first, I really breathed a sigh of relief, but you have got to credit (Sean) Farrell for getting the base hit to win it.

(On the pitching game)
North Carolina did an impressive job pitching today. I was very pleased with our guys, but certainly North Carolina pitched extremely well. Trent (Peterson) pitched a marvelous ball game. I went out there in the eighth inning and I wanted him to get the last out. I didn't want to turn the ball game over to someone else, because he had worked his fanny off to put us in a position to win the ball game. And I wanted him to pitch that last out and of course, he did the job and got it done.

Florida State Pitcher Trent Peterson
(On pitching 8 innings)
I felt real strong (in the eighth inning). I felt just as good in the eighth inning as I did in the first. I had pretty much all of my pitches working throwing them off of strikes and mixing them up.
