May 16, 2007 BLACKSBURG, Va. - Charlotte scored a combined seven runs in the fourth and sixth innings, and its bullpen allowed just one hit over the final four frames as the 49ers dropped the Virginia Tech Hokies by a score of 9-3 Tuesday night in non-conference baseball action at English Field. Luke Stahl (2-0) pitched five innings to earn the win for Charlotte (41-10) while giving up six hits and three runs, none of which were earned. Brian Hamilton and Kyle Pfirrman retired 10 straight at one point in relief. Duke Falls To North Carolina A&T In 11 Innings DURHAM, N.C. - North Carolina A&T's Joe McIntyre broke a 9-9 tie with an RBI-double in the top of the 11th and the Aggies added three more runs in the inning to defeat Duke, 13-9, on Tuesday afternoon at Jack Coombs Field. The Blue Devils fall to 29-22 on the season while the Aggies improve to 24-29. Leftfielder Jeremy Jones drew a leadoff walk and rightfielder Phillip Brewington followed with a bunt single to begin the top of the 11th. McIntyre then lined an RBI-double to center to drive in Jones. Third baseman Nelson Santos followed with a two-run triple to right center, scoring Brewington and McIntyre. Designated hitter Kory Kinnear capped the four-run frame with an RBI-single to right to bring in Santos and give the Aggies a 13-9 advantage. North Carolina Holds Off Winthrop, 8-7 CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Right fielder Tim Fedroff matched a career best with four RBI on three hits to lead No. 3 North Carolina to an 8-7 win over Winthrop Tuesday in the final regular season game at the current Boshamer Stadium. The Tar Heels (42-11) withstood a three-run rally in the ninth from the Eagles (30-23) to claim their third straight win in the series. Fedroff needed to see just two pitches to drive in four of Carolina's first six runs on a second-inning triple and a third-inning single. His four early RBI proved to be huge for the Tar Heels, as Winthrop scored four times over the final three innings and left the tying run on base in the ninth. Virginia Baseball Drops 11-7 Slugfest to Coastal Carolina CHARLOTTESVILLE - The No. 5 Virginia baseball team wrapped up its 2007 non-conference slate with an 11-7 loss to No. 15 Coastal Carolina Tuesday night at Davenport Field. Coastal Carolina racked up 20 hits, an opponent record at six-year-old Davenport Field. Virginia finished with 14 hits but was unable to dig itself out of an early 6-0 hole. David Adams (Margate, Fla.) and Sean Doolittle (Tabernacle, N.J.) each had three hits for the Cavaliers. Tigers Trounce College of Charleston 19-7 Tuesday Taylor Harbin went 3-for-4 with six RBIs, and #14 Clemson scored 10 runs in the fourth inning on its way to a 19-7 in front of 5,108 fans at Doug Kingsmore Stadium on Tuesday night. Clemson improved to 35-18, while the Cougars fell to 37-16. The Tigers improved to 18-0 all-time against College of Charleston as well. The Tigers scored a season-high 19 runs in their regular-season home finale. Every Tiger starter scored at least one run and the Clemson leadoff batter reached base in all eight innings in which it batted. The Tigers, who had 15 hits on the night, slugged four homers and three doubles as well. NC State Baseball Handles UNCA, 7-4 RALEIGH, N.C. - Caleb Mangum's three-run homer capped a four-run seventh inning, and that proved to be the deciding inning as NC State handed UNC Asheville a 7-4 defeat Tuesday at Doak Field at Dail Park. The win, NC State's third in a row, improved the Wolfpack to 34-18. The Bulldogs fell to 19-36. Joey Cutler (3-0) picked up the win with three innings of relief. He allowed two runs on two hits. He struck out two without issuing a walk. Eric Taylor got the final five outs in order to record his first save of the season. Dan Weller (1-1), the fourth of six UNC Asheville pitchers, took the loss. He was charged with four runs on three hits and a wal in one-third of an inning.
