Tar Heels Open Stretch Run With 9-0 Win Over Elon ELON, N.C. - Right-hander Adam Warren and three relievers combined on a five-hit shutout, and first baseman Dustin Ackley went 3-for-4 with two RBI to lead No. 4 North Carolina to a 9-0 win over Elon Tuesday at Latham Park. In their first action since an eight-day break for final exams, the Tar Heels (38-10) won for the sixth time in the last seven games and posted their fourth straight victory over the Phoenix (27-24). Warren (9-0) went 6 1/3 scoreless innings for his second straight shutout performance and ninth consecutive victory. He has not allowed a run over his last 14 2/3 innings and gave up just three hits and one walk en route to his second win over Elon this season. Warren retired the first six batters he faced, allowed two hits in the third and then held the Phoenix hitless until the seventh. The New Bern native lowered his ERA to 1.58, tops among Carolina starters. Terrapins Secure 6-3 Home Victory Against West Virginia COLLEGE PARK, Md. - In the Maryland baseball team's final non-conference action of the season, senior Dan Melvin put the Terrapins ahead with a three-run blast to center field in the fourth inning, leading his team to a 6-3 victory against West Virginia on Tuesday evening at Shipley Field. The Terps (26-27), seeking retribution after a 13-2 loss to the Mountaineers (26-18) in Morgantown nearly three weeks earlier, knotted the game at two in the third inning, then took a sizeable lead in the fourth on Melvin's home run, his team-leading seventh of the year.
