GREENSBORO, N.C. - After helping their respective teams complete a series sweep in conference play over the weekend, Clemson's Kyle Parker was tabbed ACC Player of the Week while Miami's Chris Hernandez collected ACC Pitcher of the Week honors. The league recognition is a career first for both freshmen.
Parker went 5-for-10 with five runs scored, two doubles, three home runs, 11 RBI and three walks to help lead Clemson to a three-game sweep of Virginia Tech last weekend. The Jacksonville, Fla., product also posted a 1.600 slugging percentage and a .615 on-base percentage in the series against the Hokies. In Saturday's 8-7 win, he went 3-for-4 with a double, two homers and five RBI, including the game-winning three-run homer in the eighth inning. Parker is the first Tiger to garner player of the week accolades this season.
A native of Miami, Fla., Hernandez matched a career-high 11 strikeouts in a career-long eight innings to lead No. 1 Miami to a series-opening 1-0 win over No. 16 Virginia last Friday. The rookie southpaw struck out eight of the first 11 batters he faced and retired 11 of the final 13 batters, giving up only two hits and one walk. Hernandez, the first Hurricane to earn the league's weekly pitching honor this season, improved to 7-0 on the season with a 2.77 ERA.
Both Clemson and Miami return to the diamond for a three-game series this weekend. Clemson hosts Florida State in its last home series of the regular season. Saturday's game will be televised on RSN at 7 p.m., while Monday's meeting is set to air on CSS at 4 p.m.
Miami steps out of conference action this weekend, entertaining Saint Mary's (Calif.) for three games at Mark Light Field.
