April 23, 2012
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Georgia Tech first baseman Jake Davies has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Player of the Week, while NC State left-hander Carlos Rodon earned Pitcher of the Week honors.
Davies extended his hitting streak to a career-long 14 games, going 8-for-15 (.533) with nine RBI to lead Georgia Tech to a series win at No. 6 North Carolina and a midweek win over Georgia State. After tweaking his quad in Friday’s game, the McDonough, Ga., senior hit two monster home runs at UNC’s Boshamer Stadium in both games of Saturday’s doubleheader, including, a clutch two-run shot that tied the series finale at 2-2 in the seventh inning. The Yellow Jackets then scored twice in the eighth to win 4-2 and take the series. Davies scored a run in every game last week, did not strike out and played error-free in 43 chances at first base. He recorded a season-high four assists in Friday’s win. The senior is hitting .360 on the season and leads the ACC with 46 RBI. Davies led Tech to its first ACC road series win of the season and its first over a Top 10 team since taking two at No. 2 Miami in 2009.
NC State’s Rodon (7-0) controlled game one of a Saturday doubleheader against visiting Boston College, striking out 10 batters over eight shutout innings, spanning a 40-minute rain delay in the sixth. Rodon held a 1-2 count on a BC batter when the game was halted in the top of the sixth due to rain, but stayed warm during the delay and returned in style by registering a strikeout on his first pitch after the break and went on to work another innings. The freshman from Holly Springs, N.C. held the Eagles to five hits and one walk, and lowered his ERA to 1.23 over 73.1 innings with the outing.
