NC State's Turner, Wake Forest's Cooney Earn ACC Baseball Weekly Honors
April 16, 2012
GREENSBORO, N.C. - NC State freshman third baseman Trea Turner has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Player of the Week, while Wake Forest left-hander Tim Cooney earned Pitcher of the Week honors.
NC State's Turner tied an ACC single-game record with five stolen bases in Friday night's game at Clemson. With nine steals in four games, Turner matched Brett Williams' team-leading season total from a year ago, while improving to an NCAA leading 38-for-39 on the season. The freshman set the NC State single-season stolen base record with his 31st against Elon last Wednesday night and currently sits 25 stolen bases shy of the ACC record of 63 set by North Carolina's Brian Roberts in 1998. The Lake Worth, Fla., native is over halfway to the NC State career stolen base record of 73. Aside from his ferocious base running, Turner lifted the Pack with Saturday's biggest hit, a two-out, two-RBI double in the seventh inning, pushing home the game-tying and go-ahead runs in a 3-1 win at Clemson. In the midweek game against Elon, Turner came a homer away from hitting for the cycle, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs, a double, a triple, and two stolen bases.
Wake Forest's Cooney earned his second ACC Pitcher of the Week honor of the season after out-dueling Georgia Tech ace Buck Farmer in Friday night's 4-2 win over the Yellow Jackets.. Cooney worked 8.0 innings (tying a season-high) and scattered nine hits while not allowing a run. The Collegeville, Pa., native struck out five Yellow Jackets (four of the strikeouts came to the top three batters in the Georgia Tech order), and did not walk a batter. Of Cooney's 112 pitches in the game, 83 went for strikes (74.1 percent). The win in Friday night's opener helped the Demon Deacons to an eventual 2-1 edge in the three-game conference series.
