![]() Florida State's Tony Thomas, Jr., Wake Forest's Eric Niesen Garner Weekly ACC Baseball Honors
April 2, 2007 Thomas also national player of the week GREENSBORO, N.C. - Tony Thomas, Jr., of Florida State has been selected Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Player of the Week for the third time this season, while Eric Niesen collects his first Pitcher of the Week accolades. A junior from Valrico, Fla., Thomas had a career week as he hit .579 in four games going 11-for-19 with five home runs, five singles and a double. He scored nine times, registered eight RBI, and was a perfect 4-for-4 in the stolen base category. Thomas tallied 27 total bases and slugged 1.421 for the week to lead the Seminoles to three wins including a series victory on the road at Duke. He was also perfect in the field, converting on all 16 opportunities at second base. Against Duke over the weekend, Thomas hit .643 (9-for-14) and tallied five home runs, eight runs scored and eight RBI. He posted career-highs with two home runs and nine total bases in game one and led off the second game with a double and later hit a solo shot for his third home run of the series. In the series finale, Thomas set a career high with 10 total bases and tied career-highs in runs scored (4) and home runs (2).
The junior from New Boston, Mich., also pitched twice in relief during the week. He threw a scoreless inning on Wednesday against Winthrop and a scoreless 0.2 innings on Friday against North Carolina. Florida State and Wake Forest will be back on the field Tuesday before returning to conference play this weekend. The top-ranked Seminoles face longtime in-state rival Florida in Jacksonville, Fla., the host city of the 2007 ACC Baseball Championship. The Demon Deacons hit the road, making their first stop at Elon before traveling to Maryland for a three-game weekend series. Both games on Tuesday are scheduled for 7 p.m. -ACC-
