BC's Melchionda, Virginia's Kline Earn ACC Baseball Weekly Honors
March 26, 2012
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Boston College shortstop Anthony Melchionda has been named the ACC Baseball Player of the Week, while Virginia’s Branden Kline earned Pitcher of the Week honors.
Melchionda, a senior from Braintree, Mass., hit .421 for the week and drove in seven runs while keying the Eagles to three wins, including their first two ACC victories of the season in a series win over 14th-ranked Georgia Tech. Three of Melchionda’s hits went for extra bases, including a home run in a 2-for-5, three-RBI performance in a 15-7 win over the Yellow Jackets on Friday. Melchionda, who earned his second ACC Player of Week honor this season, went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI on Saturday, sparking BC to a 4-3 win. The multi-hit games were Melchionda’s second and third of the week.
Kline, a junior from Frederick, Md., fired a two-hit masterpiece in Virginia’s series-clinching win Saturday over Clemson. After giving up a triple on the second pitch of the game, Kline retired 27 of the next 28 batters, including the final 18 batters from the fourth through ninth innings. He recorded the first complete game of his career (his longest previous outing was 6.1 innings) and the first by a Cavalier in ACC play since May 15, 2010. It also marked the first complete game by any ACC pitcher in conference play this year.
