GREENSBORO, N.C. - For the second week in a row, North Carolina's Dustin Ackley has been selected Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Player of the Week, while Duke's Tony Bajoczky earned Pitcher of the Week accolades for the first time this season.
A freshman first baseman for UNC, Ackley led the Tar Heels to a 4-1 week and a series win at Virginia Tech. He went 11-for-22 at the plate with team highs of seven runs scored and nine runs batted in. He had four multi-hit games on the week, including a four-hit effort at Virginia Tech last Friday. He homered in the first and second innings and posted career highs of four RBI and four runs scored. Against the Hokies, the native from Walnut Cove, N.C., was 7-for-15 with five runs scored, two home runs and five RBI. Ackley currently leads the league in batting average (.500) and RBI (36).
Bajoczky, a senior from Tallahassee, Fla., tossed seven innings of shutout ball last Saturday as the Blue Devils defeated Georgia Tech, 3-0, in the second game of the weekend series. The senior hurler held the Yellow Jackets to five hits and struck out five batters without allowing a walk to improve to 4-2 on the season.
Both Duke and North Carolina return to the diamond this week. The Blue Devils will play a single game at Campbell tomorrow at 7 p.m., while the Tar Heels host Davidson on Wednesday, March 28, at 6 p.m.
