March 8, 2010
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Florida State senior shortstop Stephen Cardullo has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week, while North Carolina junior right-hander received the league’s Pitcher of the Week honor.
Cardullo, a native of Coral Springs, Fla., led the unbeaten and third-ranked Seminoles to a perfect week that featured four wins over two ranked opponents from the Southeastern Conference.
Cardullo started the week on a fine note going 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI and reached base on four of his five plate appearances in leading Florida Sate to a 10-5 victory over fifth-ranked intra-state rival Florida. He then hit .583 (7-for-12) in leading Florida State to a three-game sweep of No. 25 Georgia. Cardullo finished the weekend driving in seven runs and scoring four times while posting a .667 on-base percentage. At one stretch during the series, Cardullo had reached base in nine consecutive at-bats, including all five times on three singles and two walks in Saturday’s win over the Bulldogs. Cardullo also finished the week perfect from the field in 11 opportunities.
North Carolina’s Matt Harvey struck out 11 batters while dominating Michigan in Friday’s 4-2 win. The win was the Mystic, Conn., native’s second of the season and the 16th of his career.
Harvey allowed no runs in his eight innings of work, while fanning double-digit batters from the third time in his career. He twice struck out the side and was two shy of his career high 13 strikeouts.
