Hokies' Sosnoskie, Yellow Jackets' McGuire Receive ACC Baseball Honors
Feb. 23, 2009
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia Tech catcher Anthony Sosnoskie and Georgia Tech pitcher Deck McGuire have been tabbed for the Atlantic Coast Conference’s first weekly baseball honors of the 2009 season. Sosnoskie, a junior from Front Royal, Va., was voted ACC Player of the Week after leading the Hokies to a 4-0 start during opening weekend. McGuire, a sophomore from Richmond, Va., received the nod as ACC Pitcher of the Week after posting an Opening Day victory that began a three-game series sweep of visiting Lipscomb. Sosnoskie was named the MVP of the Courtyard by Marriott Classic in Spartanburg, S.C., after posting a .643 batting average, a 1.429 slugging percentage and a .750 on-base percentage. Sosnoskie belted three home runs during Saturday’s doubleheader sweep of Wofford after hitting six all of last season. His efforts also helped Virginia Tech post a 21-4 win over UNC Asheville and an 11-3 victory over USC-Upstate. McGuire struck out 13 Lipscomb batters over seven innings in Georgia Tech’s 9-0 victory to earn a win in the first weekend start of his career. McGuire yielded just three hits and one walk while combining on a three-hit shutout of the Bison. The 13 strikeouts were the most by a Yellow Jacket pitcher since the 2000 season. McGuire faced just three batters over the minimum against a talented Lipscomb team that advanced to last year’s NCAA Tournament. After an open date today, ACC teams resume non-conference play, with seven games slated for Tuesday and six more set for Wednesday.
