GREENSBORO, N.C. - Florida State's Tony Thomas, Jr., was named the season's first Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Player of the Week, while Maryland hurler Kevin Biringer earned Pitcher of the Week accolades.
In Florida State's three-game sweep of UNC Asheville last weekend, Thomas went 8-for-11 (.727), posting an on-base percentage of .800 and a slugging percentage of 1.000. He scored eight runs and collected three doubles, three walks, two RBI and was 3-for-3 in stolen bases for the week. In game one, the junior was 2-for-4 with a single, a double, two walks and three runs scored. He followed up the next day with three singles, a hit-by-pitch and a stolen base and in the series finale, recorded a bunt single in the first, back-to-back doubles in both the second and third innings and a walk in the fourth.
A junior from Albuquerque, N.M., Biringer faced 15 batters and struck out five in 5.0 innings of work against Creighton on Sunday as Maryland defeated the Bluejays 10-4 to wrap up its season-opening weekend. The right-handed hurler retired the first nine batters he faced before allowing just one baserunner, a leadoff single in the fourth. Biringer is the 13th Terrapin to receive the league's weekly pitching honor.
Both FSU and Maryland return to the diamond this week, as the Seminoles play host to Hofstra and Maryland welcomes UCF. Each of the team's three-game series is slated for Friday-Sunday, February 16-18.
