Five ACC teams ranked in College Baseball Pre-Season Poll

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Five Atlantic Coast Conference teams, including three that reached last season's College World Series, are ranked in the 2009 College Baseball Pre-Season Poll.

North Carolina, which reached the 2008 CWS semifinals and will be seeking its fourth straight trip to Omaha, is ranked second behind preseason favorite LSU. Florida State, which also appeared in the 2008 CWS, is ranked seventh.

Georgia Tech is ranked 12th, while defending ACC champion and 2008 CWS participant Miami is ranked 18th. Clemson received a No. 26 preseason ranking.

Virginia and NC State, which both made the 2008 NCAA postseason field, are among the teams receiving votes.

In first baseman/outfielder Dustin Ackley, infielder Kyle Seager and right-handed pitcher Alex White, Carolina returns multiple All-America selections for the first time in school history. Ackley, White and right-hander Matt Harvey were honored as NCBWA preseason All-America picks last week.

Florida State lost consensus national player of the year Buster Posey to the Major League Draft (San Francisco) but returns preseason All-America third baseman Stuart Tapley and two other Brooks Wallace Award preseason candidates in shortstop Jason Stidham and outfielder Tyler Holt.

Georgia Tech's strong cast of returnees includes preseason All-America shortstop Derek Dietrich and his Brooks Wallace Award preseason candidate, pitcher Deck McGuire. Despite heavy losses to the MLB Draft and graduation, Miami also returns a strong corps headed by All-America pitcher Chris Hernandez, All-America shortstop Ryan Jackson and pitcher Kyle Bellamy.

Clemson sports two of the ACC's top returning offensive players in slugging first baseman Ben Paulsen and versatile multi-position player Kyle Parker, another pair of Brooks Wallace candidates.

The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll, which began in 1957, is the oldest college baseball poll.. The complete 2009 preseason poll rankings are listed at the bottom of the page.
