Maryland Downs Wake Forest in Opening Round of ACC Baseball Tournament

SALEM, Va. - In a game that featured 27 combined runs and 31 hits, Maryland captured their first win in ACC Tournament play in five years Tuesday evening as the Terrapins downed the Wake Forest Demon Deacons 15-12. Maryland's 15 runs scored were the most scored by the Terrapins in an ACC Tournament game. First baseman Anthony Buffone led all Maryland players with four hits, while Brian Jarosinski and Will Frazier drove in five and three runs for the Terps, respectively. Wake Forest's Nick Blue set an ACC single game record with five stolen bases, while teammate Matt Miller went a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate in the loss. Maryland scored five runs on six hits to start things off in the top half of the first of the 2004 ACC Baseball Tournament. The Terrapins led off with three straight hits off Wake Forest starter Justin Keadle including a Will Frazier double to right center scoring a pair of runs. With two outs in the first, Frazier would cross the plate on Brian Jarosinski's RBI double to deep left field. Truan Mehl continued the hot hitting for the Terps as he hit a stand-up RBI triple to dead center. Mehl would score the fifth and final run of the inning when Dan Melvin hit an RBI single to left field. Wake Forest countered with a run in the bottom half of the first to cut into the Maryland lead. Leadoff hitter Nick Blue reached first with an infield single. He stole second and then third and came into score on a sacrifice fly to left field off the bat of right fielder Steve LeFaivre.
In the top half of the second, Maryland would extend its lead to 9-1 adding four more runs on a pair of home runs with two outs. Frazier collected his second hit of the evening as he sent a solo shot over the wall in left center. Jarosinski followed that with his fourth RBI, thanks to a three-run home run, his team leading 16th of the year.
The Terrapin eight-run lead was short lived as the Demon Deacons scored six in the bottom of the third to make the score to 9-7. Nick Blue started things off with a leadoff walk and later stole second for his third stolen base of the game. With two on and one out, LeFaivre hit his team-leading 13th home run of the season along with registering his fourth RBI of the game. First baseman Brad Scioletti then singled and scored on a balk, while center fielder Matt Miller drove in a pair of runs with a one out single. Maryland would strike back with two more runs in the top of the fourth inning. Buffone led off the inning with a double off the wall in right and scored on a throwing error by the Wake third baseman. Frazier walked and scored on Jarosinski's sac fly for his fifth RBI of the game. In the top of the sixth inning, the Terps increased their lead by eight to make the score 15-7. Melvin hit an RBI double to right field scoring Jarosinski, who led off the inning being hit by a pitch. Second baseman Matt Maropis connected on his third single of the evening driving in his first run of the ballgame. Kevin Hart registered his first RBI of the game as he hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring shortstop Elliot Singletary. Wake Forest once again cut into the Maryland lead with two more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Doug Riepe started the inning with a single followed by Miller, who tied a season-high with his fourth hit of the evening. Left fielder Casey Sterk then got his first hit of the evening with an RBI single to left. Antonelli would account for the second run of the inning as he sent a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Miller. The Demon Deacons added one more run in the bottom half of the eighth as Miller collected his fifth hit of the game (5-for-5), an RBI single to right field scoring LeFaivre. Wake Forest would counter with a rally in the bottom of the ninth scoring two runs to cut the deficit to 15-12. With two on and two out, catcher J.B. Tucker sent a deep fly to straight away center field, but it was to no avail as Jarosinski tracked it down on the warning track to end the threat. With the win, Maryland runs their record to 22-32 and will face the top-seeded Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at 1:30 pm tomorrow afternoon. Wake Forest drops to17-33 with the loss. |
