Wake Forest Beats Duke in ACC Baseball Opener
May 24, 2005
JACKSONVILLE, FL (AP)Matt Antonelli hit an Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament record-tying three doubles and also scored three times to support the four-hit pitching performance of Charlie Mellies in Wake Forest's 10-1 win over Duke in the first game of the ACC Baseball Tournament Tuesday at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville. Wake Forest (26-28) now awaits the Virginia Tech-Maryland contest, meeting that winner in a game this evening. The winner of that game moves into the start of Wednesday's double elimination tournament, taking on No. 1 seeded Georgia Tech in the opener. Duke's season concluded at 14-39. Antonelli doubled in the first, third and sixth innings and added a pair of walks while scoring three times in his perfect performance at bat. Ben Ingold added a pair of singles and drove in three runs while Brett Linnenkohl had a single and triple for the Demon Deacons, driving home two runs and scoring three times. That supported the complete game performance of Mellies who earned his third win in eight decisions this year. He threw a season high 132 pitches but was saved from a higher total by throwing just six pitches in both the seventh and eighth innings in retiring six consecutive batters. He finished strong setting down the last 10 men he faced. It was the first one-sided game between the two ACC teams who had
played
three one-run games this year. Duke committed four errors for the fourth
time in as many games, with all five runs off Blue Devils starter Greg
Burke
(5-9) unearned. Adam Murray had two of the four Duke hits and scored the
team's only run in the sixth inning.
