![]() Orvella's 11th-Inning Homer Carries Pack Past Tar Heels
May 24, 2003
SALEM, Va. (AP) -- Chad Orvella hit his fifth home run of the season leading off the 11th inning Saturday night and North Carolina State beat North Carolina 7-6 in the winners' bracket of the ACC tournament. Orvella connected against Whitley Benson (3-3), driving a 2-1 pitch just over the wall in left field for his first homer of the tournament. Benson, who won the Tar Heels' 10-inning game against Florida State on Friday night, escaped further damage, but Wolfpack closer Joey Devine completed a dazzling 4 1-3-inning outing with a 1-2-3 11th inning. Devine (5-2) escaped three tough spots in his first three innings, then retired the last seven batters he faced. He had seven strikeouts. With the victory, the Wolfpack (42-14) had to turn right around and get ready to play the late game Saturday against top-seeded Florida State. North Carolina (39-20) will play Georgia Tech on Sunday. The Wolfpack had a chance to go ahead in the ninth when Adam Hargrave led off with a single and Matt Camp reached on an error. But Iannetta picked Hargrave off second on a missed bunt attempt by Dustin Murphy, and Kevin Brower, the Tar Heels' third pitcher, retired the next two hitters. In the bottom half, Iannetta led off with a double, but Devine struck out Wes Moyer and pinch-hitter Chase Younts and Mangum grounded out. Devine, who struck out Blair Waggett with two runners on to end the seventh, also escaped a bases-loaded, one out mess in the eighth, striking out Sammy Hewitt with heat and getting Ryan Blake to fly to right. North Carolina pulled even at 6 in the seventh against reliever Phillip Davidson. Sean Farrell drew a leadoff walk, took second on Ryan Blake's squib in front of the plate and scored on Chris Iannetta's single.
The Wolfpack scored four times in the sixth, getting four hits and a walk from their first five batters to knock out Garry Bakker. The righthander had allowed only three hits in the first four innings.
Justin Riley, who had homered earlier, drove in the first run with a single, and David Hicks, Chad Orvella and Marc Maynor added RBIs against Scott Senatore before he got Adam Hargrave to hit into a double play. North Carolina used a two-run fifth to go ahead 5-2. Iannetta hit an RBI double for the first run and Wes Moyer scored him with a single. Earlier, Orvella singled home a run and Riley homered for the Wolfpack. RBI singles by Greg Mangum and Chad Prosser in the second and a RBI groundout by Mangum in the fourth gave the Tar Heels a 3-2 lead.
