![]() UNC Knocks Off Top-Seeded Seminoles, 3-2
May 23, 2003 SALEM, Va. (AP) - Sean Farrell lined an RBI single to left in the bottom of the 10th inning Friday night, scoring Chad Prosser and giving North Carolina a 3-2 victory against Florida State in the ACC tournament. The fifth-seeded Tar Heels (39-19) won it with three consecutive hits against reliever Rhett James, the last Farrell's fourth of the game. Top-seeded Florida State (48-9-1) lost despite a masterful pitching performance by Trent Peterson, who allowed two runs and six hits in eight innings. James finished, but with a lot of help from catcher Tony Richie, who threw out Chase Younts stealing in the ninth inning and picked Jeremy Cleveland off first in the 10th just before Farrell's game-winner. North Carolina advanced to play the winner of the late North Carolina State and Georgia Tech game. The Seminoles will take on Virginia, a dramatic winner against Wake Forest earlier, in an elimination game. The game produced the first pitching duel of a tournament in which no lead has seemed safe and the fielding had been Little League sloppy. The Seminoles scored a run against Adam Kalkhof in the second on Aaron Cheesman's sacrifice fly, and the Tar Heels tied it in their half when Chris Iannetta doubled home Farrell, who had singled off Peterson. The Seminoles went ahead again in the fifth on Daniel Wardell's home run, his second in as many games here, but the Tar Heels got that one back, too, on Sammy Hewitt's RBI single after a double by Farrell. Kalkhof left after allowing a leadoff single by Tony McQuade in the eighth. He allowed eight hits and struck out four while walking one.
Peterson got into a jam in the eighth when second baseman Bryan Zech's throwing error, an intentional walk and hit batsman loaded the bases with two outs, but he retired Iannetta on a hard line drive to centerfield.
