St. Petersburg, Fla. - No. 3 seed North Carolina (40-17) defeated No. 6 seed Virginia (25-31) 11-10 in the final game of the first round of the 2002 ACC Baseball Championship Wednesday night in St. Petersburg, Fla. The Tar Heels advance to face No. 2 Wake Forest at 8:30 p.m. Thursday, while Virginia will meet No. 7 NC State at 1:30 p.m.

North Carolina jumped out to an early 6-0 lead in the first and added one run apiece in the second and third innings to build an 8-0 advantage. Despite the fast start by the Tar Heels, Virginia stayed with starter Jeff Kamrath.

Kamrath held North Carolina scoreless through innings four, five and six while his teammates mounted a rally. Virginia plated four runs in the fifth and five in the sixth to take a 9-8 lead.

The Cavaliers would post one more run in the seventh to go up 10-8 before the Tar Heels rallied for three runs in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead 11-10. The key hit in that inning was a two-run single by senior Chris Maples that plated the tying and winning runs.

North Carolina reliever Carter Harrell (8-3) earned the win by keeping Virginia in check over the final 2 1/3. Virginia's Andrew Dobies (0-2) took the loss.
