St. Petersburg, Fla. - Florida State's Trent Peterson came on in relief and pitched 7 1/3 shut out innings to stop an upset bid by No. 9 seed Duke (24-33) as the No. 1 seeded Seminoles (52-12) won 10-7 in first round action at the ACC Baseball Championship in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Florida State, which resurfaced this week as the number-one ranked team in two polls, was forced to go to its bullpen early after starter Robby Read gave up five runs in the game's opening frame before relinquishing the mound to Peterson.

Peterson (4-2) earned the win by scattering three hits and striking out four before being replaced in the ninth inning by Justin Miller. Miller was chased out of the game after giving up two runs and Daniel Hodges came on to shut the door and pick up his ninth save of the season.

Duke's five-run first was highlighted by a pair of doubles by Grant Stanley and Doug Bechtol. Stanley's shot to left drove in two runs while Bechtol's plated one.

Florida State inched its way back into the game by scoring one run in the third and fifth innings before tying the game with a three-run seventh.

In the eighth, Florida State took control of the game after exploding for five runs. A single by Jerrod Brown and a double by Tony Richie each scored a pair of runs in the inning for the Seminoles. All five runs by the Seminoles in the eighth were scored with two outs.

Reliever Brian Patrick (2-4) took the loss for the Blue Devils after relieving starter Colin Begley in the seventh. During the game's first six innings, Begley kept the Seminoles in check and exited the game to an appreciative standing ovation from the Florida State fans in attendance.

Florida State advances to meet No. 4 seed Clemson at 5 p.m. on Thursday. Duke will now face No. 5 Georgia Tech in an elimination game at 10 a.m. Thursday.
