St. Petersburg, Fla. - After offensive fireworks dominated the first six innings, No. 9 seed Duke (24-32) held off No. 8 seed Maryland (34-23), 10-9 in the opening game of the 2002 ACC Baseball Championship in St. Petersburg, Fla.

The two teams combined for all of the game's 19 runs in the first six innings, but the bullpens for both teams kept the game scoreless over the final three frames.

Duke reliever Paul DeMarco (3-4) earned the win after allowing three runs over the course of the game's final six innings. DeMarco appeared to get stronger as the game came to a close as he retired the final eight batters he faced. Maryland starter Sean Kane (1-1) took the loss.

At the plate, the Blue Devils were led by Kevin Kelly, Larry Broadway and Grant Stanley. All three Duke players collected three hits in the win.

Duke advances to face No. 1 seed Florida State (51-12, 18-6 ACC) on Wednesday afternoon following a 10 a.m. match-up between No. 4 Clemson and No. 5 Georgia Tech.
